Thursday saw the arrival of a bipartisan congressional delegation to Taiwan, one day after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy defied China by meeting with the president of the island. This comes as China claims Taiwan is its territory.
China has warned reprisal if House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen during her visit to the country in the following week.
Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) blamed two Chinese ships for cutting two of the island’s undersea internet cable, halting internet services for 14,000 people, and raising national security concerns.
The United States is reportedly planning on sending troops to the island of Taiwan as tensions with China continue to rise.
The House Armed Services Committee conducted its first hearing on the threats posed by China on Tuesday.
